Randy J. (Texas) - 1976 2.7 911S

  • Timeliness of service: Work was performed exactly on schedule with the information as provided in my proposal.
  • Quality of service: First rate, and excellent job of machining and custom parts fabrication.
  • Quality of tech support: Excellent; always provided thorough answers to my questions and provided full instructions on installation and tuning.
  • Communication: Also excellent; prompt replies to e-mails, advised upon receipt and shipment of carbs.
  • Parts/service offerings you would like to see: Well, I really can't think of any in addition to what you already do!
  • Why you chose Performance Oriented? Offered to perform just the work I wanted, matching my skill level and providing cost savings.
  • Would you recommend Performance Oriented? Without a doubt.
Kudos to Paul at Performance Oriented for an excellent job of getting my Webers back in shape. My old 76 911, the "Grey Goose", had about 90K of daily driver miles since converting to carbs and I was wrestling with gradually worsening low-end spitting and popping, erratic idle, and unstable adjustments. After concentrating on just about everything but the carbs, mostly to no avail, I concluded that worn throttle shafts were the culprit. I contacted Paul to discuss my options for repairs. As I was pretty familiar with a wrench and the workings of Webers, I was really happy to learn that Paul offered the option to just do the throttle-related work and leave the rest of the carbs to me. Of course he will gladly do the rest if you wish . . . but his willingness to do just what I wanted, and no more, won me over instantly.
Paul never hesitated to spend the time necessary to answer all of my questions in advance (and I did ask more than a few questions!) Upon receipt of the carb bodies he provided a detailed proposal indicating work to be performed, cost, and schedule. Paul was great about communicating throughout the entire process, and needless to say the carbs were delivered to me on time and as expected. I chose to purchase few extra parts from Paul, like gaskets and pump diaphragms, to complete the reassembly. The carbs went back together smoothly and within a couple of hours I had them back on the engine and running with a preliminary tune. The first drive told the story - the old car was back. No more spitting or popping, a nice smooth low end, transition, and stable idle. I have had the Goose back on the road now for a few weeks and had forgotten how fun this car was to drive - the wife can have her 968 back!
I can't comment enough on Paul's expertise and capabilities with Webers, which is already well known, but I am sincerely appreciative of his professionalism in doing business with individuals like myself. Quality work performed on-time and for the stated cost, with full communication and personal assistance provided. It was a great experience and I was glad to have been able to tap in to some of Paul's "Weber Wisdom"!

Bill L. (Virginia) - 1970 914/6 2.5 liters

I will start off by saying that I have yet to complete my engine and have thus not had a chance to put the carbs on and test them for functionality. What I can say, without having put the carbs on a running engine is that working with you throughout the process of bringing my carbs back to life, was a joy.

I was referred to you by a friend of mine who got your information from the R-Gruppe website and I would recommend Performance Oriented to anyone who needs an expert in all topics Weber related. You were open and up front during the entire process, stuck to the timeline we agreed upon, communicated with me frequently, and exceeded not only my expectations, but the expectations of several Porsche enthusiasts with doubts about whether my carbs could be saved.

I was on the verge of writing the carbs off as unusable, and you brought them back to life. By back to life, I mean they look new. Your attention to detail and the time you spent, especially in the restoration of the carb's "straw color", shows in the face of people who see the carbs. You have saved me thousands, and more importantly, saved another set of these rare carbs from being discarded as unusable.

Seresia C. (Belgium) - 1967 911

Due to the obvious need of an overhaul of the cylinder heads, and the lack of funds to have the machining done for the moment; I had to put the project temporarily on hold. So I did not have the chance to test the carbs up to now. However I will make the comments I can make:
  • Quality of tech support: The man knows what he is talking about, understands also the market, and is willing to share the experience with you.
  • Communication: Good Communication is essential when you have a job done over longer distance. Good communication is essential when something goes not as expected. I can tell my story where I did sent my carbs over to P.O. in order to rectify a number of obvious faults. I received the alarming response after an investigation that the carb bodies of my carbs were beyond repair. The bores were destroyed by a previous re-builder and even in such an extend that the available tooling could not be used to rectify the situation.

This is now the point where communication makes the difference between a disappointing service and a satisfying service. In my case due to excellent communication we were able to turn a disappointing feeling into a satisfied feeling. We discussed various options (PMO carbs, spare body and searching e-bay) and...good carbs were sourced on e-bay from a NASCAR driver in Texas. The carbs traveled from Texas back to P.O. for total inspection. We discussed what could be better and small extra service work was agreed on. The carbs were "live engine" tested and tuned to basic setting. A week later I received the carbs in splendid shape at my door in Belgium - Europe.

You have to understand that as a teacher for profession I am no "Rockefeller", so sending carbs to California, paying serious dollars for good carbs in Texas and sending them back to California for final service work is something you only do when the communication is outstanding. Although larger amounts of money were spent than original budgeted, at no time, I had any doubt my money was well spent. In the way we communicated I felt confident that the final outcome would be very positive.
  • Why you chose Performance Oriented? The way they do business. Quality and honesty and good communication checked for on the internet forums.
  • Would you recommend Performance Oriented? Although I know very good restores in Germany and Britain, I have sent my carbs overseas to Performance Oriented in California. The combination of level of communication, quality of work and the good dollar to euro exchange rate makes it a company I can recommend.

Mike F. (Illinois) - 1968 911

See my comments below, the carbs are great!
  • Timeliness of service: Paul conformed easily to my timeframe.
  • Quality of service: Paul performed all requested work and also did work that was not technically included in our agreement.
  • Quality of tech support: Paul has answered all technical questions I have asked him promptly.
  • Communication: Very easy communication both on the phone and through email.
  • Parts/service offerings you would like to see: Would like to see carb tuning process on website. Maybe some other things like accelerator pedal adjustment and other things that relate to carburetors or perceived carb issues, like ignition issues.
  • Why you chose Performance Oriented? Researched online and found nothing but good comments about Paul.
  • Would you recommend Performance Oriented? I would and in fact I already have!

Tom F. (Oregon) - 1967 911S

I was thrilled with the work and your service. I'm picking the motor up from Gordon Ledbetter tomorrow. You and Gordon have a similar attention to detail. The one nit picked was that the safety wire you use is too big.
When I get a chance I'll get some good photos of the engine. You might want to use one, it's gorgeous. I'm also planning to post photos on the registry, as I think guys will be interested to see a correct 67S engine rebuild/restoration. I will definitely mention your name and my opinion of your work. I think there are plenty of guys out there that would appreciate your level of quality.
I chose you by the way because my friend Steve Weiner recommended you. I was about to send them to Harry Bieker.

[NOTE: I now use a smaller wire in keeping with OEM sized wire; the larger wire I was using gave a more robust securing of critical fasteners on the throttle bodies. For those customers wanting an exacting OEM Weber restoration I have safety wire and OEM photographs to achieve this result. - Paul]

Larry M. (Illinois) - 2.7 Carrera with Solex cams; 42mm throttle bores

  • Timeliness of service: Paul made every effort to complete my project on time. He called to inform me, after he looked at my carburetors, that he would be able to complete the project ahead of schedule, which he did.
  • Quality of service: The quality was very good overall. The loose roll pin on the throttle shaft and not resurfacing the bottoms of the bodies were problems. You did respond very quickly with possible solutions to those problems. I appreciated that you took personal time out to help.
[NOTE: I have adopted machining all throttle bodies flat (Resurfacing Sealing Interfaces and Thread Repair) since this project and my Installation and Basic Tuning Guidelines references checking manifold interfaces for flatness. The loose roll pin was due to a previous throttle body rebuild that oversized the hole; a slightly oversized pin corrected this quickly. -Paul]
  • Quality of tech support: Excellent. See above.
  • Communication/Why I chose: I called you out of the clear blue one day after seeing your name mentioned in a tech. article online. Right off the bat you were very interested and helpful with my project. I felt very comfortable sending you my carburetors and confident they would be done correctly.
  • Parts/services: Correct finish on bodies. Possibly better recommendations for jetting, etc. I like the fact that you can run the carb's on an engine to verify that they do work properly. Maybe you could advise customers about making sure the manifolds are flat. You may already do this but I do not remember this during our conversations. A simple thing but commonly overlooked.
  • Would you recommend Performance Oriented? Yes, I would recommend Paul and will use his services again. Your advice and recommendations were extremely helpful. It is nice to deal with a person who genuinely cares about his services and products before and AFTER the sale. I appreciated the fact that you listened and could actually believe that there might be a problem with your work, rather then just thinking the customer didn't know what he was talking about.

After correcting the problems, with your help, the car runs fantastic. My customer sent the car out to Montana to participate in The Going To The Sun rally. First time he had any real time behind the wheel of this car. The car ran flawlessly the entire 5 days. He and his sons drive the car any time they can and still rave about how well it runs. Any one who drove the car was very impressed. Your work on this project helped out a lot, especially with the time frame we had to work with.

If I get another Weber project you are first on my list. I have been recommending you to anyone that is looking for Weber help.

Al K. (Washington) - 2.7RS clone

I had my Weber 40IDAs rebuilt by Paul Abbott of Performance Oriented. I wanted to share what I feel was a great experience. My Webers, while in generally decent shape, had obvious signs of shaft wear and were spitting, getting hard to tune, etc. Paul came to my attention via Pelican and/or the Early S Registry. We got in contact with each other and arranged for Paul to rebuild my carbs. Paul offers several stages of rebuild, from partial DIY to a very complete rebuild. He sends you an excellent description of services, along with the costs and you choose your level/options.

Once Paul receives your carbs, he analyzes the condition and gets back to you with a suggested route to take and a firmed up cost. Total turn time for my carbs was about a week or so. I received them this morning. The packaging was very good and protective. The carbs, on first impression looked very nice and clean. Upon closer inspection I could see that they were basically completely rebuilt with two new shafts, bushings, butterflies, gaskets, etc. (Looked like new!)

He also sent back all the parts that he replaced. Paul replaced one of my floats with one of his, in better shape....He tuned the carbs on his engine and had them set up close to perfect. He really went the extra mile. I installed them and the engine fired right up and, once warm, idled smoother than ever before. It ran really good, I just had to balance the carbs and away I went. Great throttle response, sound, etc. I am a happy customer and I recommend Paul highly.

.....Great service and value.

Christer L. (Sweden) - 2.2 911E

I've just received the carburetors and it's a splendid work you've done on them! I don't have so much time to write now because I have been writing an update on the local forum on my carburetor project. And I have to drive home soon. I can just say that I'm very thankful for that work.

You can find the post I wrote on the address below and if you go in to "tekniskt forum" and find the post about "glapp i webrar" you have the opportunity to even more practice your Swedish! And I will later put your information on the link list. http://www.early911.se

I was very satisfied with the rebuild of my Weber carburetors and the service provided during installation and tuning of the carbs. I would do it again and can recommend the service of Performance Oriented!

Erik Q. (Maryland) - 2.4 911T

Paul good to hear from you! Hope all is going well. Have responded below. Please feel free to use me as a reference any time. Carbs continue to run pop/spit free.
  • Timeliness of service: Could not have asked for better. With Bieker and Eurometrix talking in terms of months and quarters your turn around is a BIG deal!
  • Quality of service: Loved the return of old parts as well as included measurements. Shows a LOT of work goes into these and was a nice touch. Also your tuning notes are something I consider myself lucky to have.
  • Quality of tech support: Shit man you tuned my carbs in a hotel parking for nothing more than a marginal meal at a strip center! I still owe you a good meal if you get back to the east coast.
  • Communication: Excellent.
  • Parts/service offerings you would like to see: Suspect as time passes and Weber carb bodies get older and older more folks will be looking for ITB EFI options.
  • Why you chose Performance Oriented? Turn around time and price
  • Would you recommend Performance Oriented? Would, have, do and will continue to.

Marvin K. (Vermont) - 1973 2.7RS clone

The carburetors are working very well. Even though the carbs ended up going back to you once I felt completely satisfied. I always felt like I was dealing with an honest, knowledgeable craftsman even when they didn't work quite right at first. I have never been so satisfied with how a setback like that was handled.

So I think that the quality of service and especially the communication I received were excellent. I found Performance Oriented after hearing about you on one of the websites, I think Pelican or perhaps Rennlist. I would be glad to recommend Performance Oriented to people in the future ( I already have).

[NOTE: This project came back due to a loose throttle plate. I was using pinch screws which another supplier of aftermarket carburetors uses on their products but I have since reverted to traditional screws that I modify with special preparations to assure this issue is corrected. - Paul]
